Phoenix is the 5th most populous city nationwide and the most populous state capital in the US. Phoenix is the anchor of the Phoenix metropolitan area, also known as the Valley of the Sun, which in turn is a part of the Salt River Valley. Phoenix was settled in 1867 as an agricultural community close to the Salt and Gila Rivers because it has a hot desert climate, the Hohokam canal system (investigated in 1887) led to a thriving a farming community that gave Phoenix an economy that included cotton, cattle, citrus, climate, and copper. These industries remained the cities driving force until a little after WWII when high-tech companies moved in and brought air conditioning with them making Phoenix what it is today.
